How much time should you spend on the training and how quickly should you work through the material?
The amount of time you should spend on each section of the training will depend upon the size and complexity of your organization, among other factors. We advise against approaching this question by considering how much time you have available to dedicate to the process. The problem with this line of thinking is that, as a busy non-profit, it is far too easy to say, "well, we don't have any time today, we'll do it tomorrow." Of course, "tomorrow" never comes, and your CPDR training ultimately gets postponed forever.
It is critical that you develop the proper mindset - one in which CPDR is perceived to be an essential activity - and that this positive attitude be shared by everyone within your organization. While there are certainly more pressing concerns that demand staff's immediate attention, CPDR should receive as much emphasis as any other activity. One way to think abut this (or to communicate the importance to the less-enthusiastic) is to acknowledge and embrace the fact, that by not making any continuity plans or not conducting any disaster response/recovery training you are jeopardizing your organization's ability to perform the tasks typically thought to be more urgent or important - such as program service delivery or fundraising.
Ideally, you should take your time when reading over the materials and when completing the forms or conducting activities. Most of all, it is important that you not rush through the process, allowing yourself plenty of time to thoroughly consider the issues.
