An Unpleasant Truth
That something will happen, at some point in the future, that prevents your organization from doing its work is certain. Equally as certain is that this "something" will catch you by surprise. What is decidedly uncertain, however, is whether it will happen next week or next year, and how severe a setback this "incident" will prove to be. What will your clients do when you can no longer provide the services on which they depend? What will your donors think about your inability to provide the services their contributions were given to fund?
Perhaps these are dire sounding questions, but there's no denying the seriousness of the matter. On the other hand, there's no need to panic either. While you will never be able to eliminate surprise threats, you can significantly reduce their impact. In fact, being prepared for whatever certain uncertain events that lurk in your future is not the impossible task it may at first seem. Of course, this is not to say that it will be an easy task and you will have to do a little work. Given a bit of dedicated effort, you will find that business continuity and disaster recovery is entirely within your reach.
