Glossary of Threats
Medical Emergencies: On-the-job illness or accidents can occur at any time. The outcome of occupational injuries depends not only on the severity of the injury, but also on the rendering of first aid. Prompt, properly administered first aid can mean the difference between life and death, rapid versus prolonged recovery, and temporary versus permanent disability. OSHA requires that, "adequate first aid supplies be readily available" for injured employees, and that personnel adequately trained in first aid be present in the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to the workplace. In emergency situations employees may be exposed to a wide variety of hazardous circumstances, including chemical splashes or contact with toxic materials; falling objects and flying particles; unhealthy atmospheres (i.e. toxic gases, vapors, or inadequate oxygen); fires and electrical hazards; and violence in the workplace.
Mergers and Acquisitions: Mergers and acquisitions are certain to impact the continuity plans of the organizations involved. Mergers and acquisitions can result in the loss or addition or personnel, elimination or expansion of one of the organizations involved, consolidation of services, and/or a host of other changes.
Multi-Tenant Sites: Moving into a facility where your organization is one of multiple tenants - instead of the owner or sole occupant - has risks as well as rewards. While a multi-tenant site may allow your organization to take a hands-off approach to building maintenance and repair, it is smart to know who is responsible for such tasks and to familiarize yourself with the policies and procedures by which those responsible are governed. Ignorance, combined with a complacent approach, could result in downtime, physical damage, strife with neighboring tenants, and a strained relationship with the landlord, owner, or property manager.
